In the plane

Becoming a pilot can be a highly rewarding job in a stable industry, which continues to grow with advances in aviation technology. It also requires a lot of work and training, which often covers the same flying concepts regardless of the type of aircraft. The training will be costly, as will renting the aircraft, but if you truly want to become a pilot then there are several things to consider when preparing for flight training:

Play a flight simulator for an extended period

Several decades ago, flight simulators were reserved for only the extremely wealthy and government workers. Today, anyone can purchase a top-notch flight simulator with the appropriate equipment for a few hundred dollars. This makes learning how to fly much easier for anyone who has a passion for becoming a pilot.

Using the flight simulator for hours at a time will prepare the user for the endurances of aviation. Additionally, acclaimed flight simulator joysticks like the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog Joystick emulate real-life aircrafts, making its price tag well worth it for aspiring pilots.

Get a FAA Medical Certificate

In order to attend flight school and fly, you must undergo a FAA Medical to receive a certificate that confirms you are healthy enough to fly. You can read details on the FAA Medical Certificate here.

There are restrictions for certain types of vision impairment, high blood pressure, and hearing impairment, so it is important to obtain your FAA Medical Certificate before moving any further in your quest to become a pilot.

Choose a flight school and instructor

With your medical certificate and pilot aspirations ready, it’s time to choose a flight school. There are many resources online where you can search locally for a flight school, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Seek out reviews of the flight school, and if you can, speak to a professional pilot about the best schools in your area.

Immerse yourself in the aviation hobby

Now that your aviation education is ready, you will likely have some time to prepare before training starts. This is the time to use the abundance of resources available online and at your library for aspiring pilots.

There are a variety of aviation books available on Amazon, including the highly acclaimed Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying. DVDs and YouTube clips are also useful to allow the aspiring pilot to become relatively familiar with a cockpit before entering.

Another aspect of flying that aspiring pilots often forget is radio communication in the cockpit. It is very important to memorize special flight terminology, which is one aspect of aviation that can be largely self-taught.

Learn as much about aviation as you can before and during your time as a student pilot, and continue to educate yourself even after you’ve gotten your pilot’s license. Knowledge is power, and it’s always smart to stay informed.
